SoundHound parnters with Spotify to offer music streaming in Europe

SoundHoundMusic discovery company SoundHound has formed a partnership with streaming music service provider Spotify that will allow European SoundHound users to instantly access Spotify’s catalog of 15 million tracks, the company announced Thursday.

Much like its rival Shazam, SoundHound’s free mobile application identifies music by listening to songs that are currently playing or by users humming or singing the song. It also provides users with lyrics, song previews, YouTube videos and now integration with Spotify.

SoundHound users on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices? — who also have a premium Spotify subscription — will be given the option to ‘Play Now in Spotify’ after identifying a song through SoundHound. If the user chooses the option, SoundHound will then seamlessly launch Spotify’s service, immediately playing the requested song while showcasing the requested artist’s singles, albums and compilations.

For now, it doesn’t appear that the partnership will extend to users in the U.S., which is likely due to the complex music licensing agreements with major record labels.

Founded in 2005, San Jose, Calif.-based SoundHound has received funding from Global Catalyst Partners, TransLink Capital, Walden Venture Capital and others.

Anonymous formclose (x)UK Carrier Orange to Offer Customers 'Free' iTunes Movie Rental in Ongoing PromoMonday August 8, 2011 2:22 am PDT by Arnold KimUK mobile carrier Orange seems to be working with Apple to provide "free" iTunes movie rentals each Thursday in an ongoing promotion called Orange Film To Go.

? All Orange customers be they on Orange Home Broadband, pay as you go, pay monthly, mobile broadband or business get a weekly film download every Thursday at no cost*
? Customers can download a film and watch on a PC, laptop or an Apple mobile device - wherever they are

Orange Film To Go offers Orange customers a specific film to download from iTunes every Thursday. The specific movies are pre-selected by Orange and early choices include The Wrestler, The Ghost and Che: Part One. This week's selection is My Blueberry Nights. Spencer McHugh, Brand Director at Orange UK said: “We know Orange customers love film, so adding the Orange Film To Go service to our existing portfolio of film offers is hugely exciting for us. Giving our valued customers a film download every week to enjoy at home or out and about on a mobile device is a great way to thank them for being part of Orange. We’ve got some fantastic titles lined up for the launch and even more yet to be announced, so we’re hoping to see a significant number of our customers taking up this offer.”

Coupon codes for each weekly film are retrieved by texting texting ‘FILMTOGO’ to 85060. A 35p text message cost does apply, so they are not quite free. Movies can then be redeemed (only) on Thursday and then the usual iTunes movie rental rules kick in. Customers have 30 days to start watching the movie and then 48 hours to finish watching it. You actually get charged 35p for the 'text code' to download it, and SMS is essentially a free-to-run side service for mobile phone companies. Of course, the current film "My Blueberry Nights" is on iTunes uk store at £2.49 for a rental, so that's still a significant saving of £2.14.Rating: 2 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1Reason0772 hours ago at 08:39 amOh, Orange. You seem like a nice company. Whenever I go to the movies I see your quirky, funny ads featuring hollywood celebs. You keep trying to tempt me away from O2 with your competitive pricing and great offers like Orange Wednesdays, and now this deal with iTunes.

Yet, after about 2 years of carrying the iPhone on your network you still do not support Visual Voicemail - one killer feature on my iPhone that I can't live without.

Damn you Orange, WHY!? :mad:Rating: 1 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1EvanLugh7 hours ago at 03:51 amthis sounds great, however i can't imagine it being any film... surely. this is orange after all..Rating: 1 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1FrizzleFryBen7 hours ago at 03:24 amEverything free has some cost associated with it. I wouldn't complain about the gas to drive to pick up a free couch. It would be cool if some American telecoms did cool things for their customers like this once in a while.Rating: 1 Positives / 1 NegativesAvatar1tommy0602898 hours ago at 02:28 amSounds like a nice addition to orange Wednesday's. Although I'm still unlikely to go with orange as I prefer to buy my iPhone unlocked and then pick the best carrier for my needs!

Also, when I first read it it sounded like any film rental. So hopefully it won't just be rubbish n older films!Rating: 0 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1barberio7 hours ago at 03:10 amTime to dig out my 6310 on PAYG

Altho, I wouldn't expect them to select a film that you'd go out of your way to see.Rating: 0 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1samh0047 hours ago at 03:14 amYou can get free movies every weekend in Australia, the URL is listed in certain papers, and can be free if you happen to see the URL in someone else’s paper. Latest Airport extreme and time capsule offer better range of Wi - Fi and Performance

The new Airport Extreme and Time Capsule released by Apple in June did not upgrade announced, outside a bump of capacity on the time Capsule. However, Brian Klug to AnandTech has written an extraordinarily detailed new devices and found review they have notably improved the previous generation.

KLUG notes that the new devices are virtually indistinguishable from their older counterparts, but in the detailed tests, they found range and throughput more. At the end of the day, the Airport Extreme Base Station new dramatically improves throughput in the best cases and in a few areas where the signal was previously unusable. In the worst case (place 4), improves the performance to be essentially unusable to totally fine and in the case of the 2010MBP will not be able to connect to all the pushing 23 Mbit/S.

[...]

Major improvements with AFS (actual file transfer) to occur outside at the extremes where previously signal was unusable on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. really, which tells the story of the (sometimes dramatic) difference that makes the solution WLAN power higher in the 5th generation on the 4th generation.

The highest speeds are obtained with the generation of 2011 MacBook Pro, which includes an upgrade "three flow space compliant WLAN stack", which is basically the hardware and software new generation wireless.

The new Airport extreme base station includes a slightly different chipset, moving a come from Marvell a Broadcom: the result of the relocation of Marvell to Broadcom is twofold. First of all, the performance and range is certainly better thanks to transmit more power and improved sensitivity afforded by the new generation chipsets. Second, the combination of lots of Broadcom in material range Apple (from the iPhone, iPad and MacBooks, iMac and Mac Mini) with Broadcom capable access point allows the use of the break-up of the frame or any other technique of packet aggregation which accelerates things in certain scenarios. This is another example of how that with complete hardware control may in fact result in certain advantages - in this case, faster Wi - Fi.

KLUG completes the review noting the Airport Extreme is reasonable price competitively and prefers because the it "work really [e] without locking, becoming unstable periodically from the session of overheating when cornered at 100% for hours, or requiring a daily reboot.".
