New iPhone 5 to land on Sprint

Wireless carrier Sprint will launch Apple‘s latest smartphone, the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4 simultaneously in mid-October, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Journal cited sources familiar with the matter that indicated the phone would arrive in time for Apple’s fiscal fourth quarter. The Wall Street Journal’s “people familiar with the matter” line is typically code for an inside source that is feeding the Journal information about a new product or company news.

Sprint is the last major carrier that does not carry the iPhone. Apple sold more than 20 million iPhones in the third quarter this year and it sold 8.4 million iPhones in the third quarter last year. The company finally launched the phone on Verizon in February, 2011.

The new reports are contrary to rumors that the phone would arrive in September, at the end of the company’s fiscal third quarter. The iPhone 4 launched on Verizon halfway through one of Apple’s fiscal operating quarters on June 24, giving the company an incomplete picture of how well the iPhone 4 was doing compared to previous iterations of the smartphone.

The iPhone 4 currently retails at $199 for a 16-gigabyte model and $299 for a 32-gigabyte model, and both require a contract with wireless providers AT&T and Verizon. That puts the phones out of the price range of many devices that run Google’s operating system, Android, which can cost as little as $50.

There are also reports of Apple building a cheaper iPhone 4 alongside the iPhone 5 that would likely replace the current low-end 8GB iPhone 3GS, which retails for $50 with a two-year contract. The 3GS?is considered dated and is nearly two years old, while new Android devices come out daily that have better technical specifications than the iPhone 3GS and sport a similar price tag.

Apple iOS 5 features earthquake warnings for Japanese iPhone users

apple-ios-5-earthquake-warning

The next version of Apple’s iOS software will include an earthquake warning notification system for Japanese iPhone owners, according to 9to5Mac.

After the damaging earthquake that hit Japan earlier this year, Apple decided it was time to hook its popular smartphones into the Japanese early warning system that can give people up to two minutes of warning time before a quake hits. Apple head Steve Jobs reportedly sent out a note to Apple employees in Japan after the earthquake occurred, assuring them the company would do whatever it could to help employees and their families.

Japanese iPhone owners previously used individual apps to stay connected to the early warning system. The new feature is listed at the bottom of the iOS 5 Notification Center pane and can be turned on and off with one swipe (see photo above). The notification does drain battery a bit because it maintains a constant connection, but many users will likely not mind.

While the beta is available now to developers, iOS 5 will officially launch in the fall, most likely at the same time the next iPhone launches. The most recent iPhone 5 rumor, which supposedly sources an AT&T vice president, says the next-gen iPhone will be released in “early October.”

Apple building cheaper 8GB iPhone 4: Could this be the iCloud iPhone?

Apple suppliers are currently in the process of building an iPhone 4 with a reduced 8 gigabytes of memory, Reuters reports.

Such a model would be less expensive than current iPhones for Apple to build, since flash memory is among the most expensive elements in the device. It would provide Apple a low-cost alternative to unveil alongside the iPhone 5, and it would likely replace the current low-end 8GB iPhone 3GS, which retails for $50 with a two-year contract.

In truth, the news isn’t too surprising. Apple has traditionally offered a cheap version of its previous iPhone generation when unveiling a new generation. This time, Apple actually has to build new devices, since the iPhone 4 is only available in 16GB and 32GB versions at the moment.

The 8GB iPhone 4 also falls in line with rumors of an iCloud iPhone, which Apple could offer for free on contract and marry to its iCloud service to make up for the lack of on-board storage. Apple likely couldn’t offer the iPhone 4 for free at this point without drastically changing the device’s design — the rumor pointed to a less expensive case without rear glass and to a simpler antenna design.

Apple traditionally hasn’t focused too much on emerging and low-end markets with the iPhone, but having an inexpensive model that it could offer for free on contract would pay off big. It would help Apple to compete against the onslaught of free and cheap Android phones, and it would open up Apple’s app ecosystem to a whole new audience.

Look out, Square! Erply releases credit card reader for iPhone, iPad

Retail management software company Erply is planning a new mobile credit card reader for iOS devices, the company announced today.

Much like competitors Square and Intuit, Erply’s mobile card reader attachment will connect to iPads and iPhones and transmit a person’s credit card data to its own point of sale software for processing payments. It also connects to Erply’s inventory management software, which should cut down on record keeping for any of the company’s 20,000 clients.

Businesses can purchase an Erply card reader attachment for $50. The company charges a 1.9 percent transaction fee, which is considerably less than the 2.75 percent fee Square charges. However, while Square’s software is free to merchants, Erply’s software has a monthly cost ranging from $100 to $1,000.

But Erply’s credit card reader offers a few other advantages over its competitors. One of the most notable is probably that it brings NFC (a short-range communication technology used for mobile payments and information transfer) to iOS devices — putting the iPhone on par with Google’s Nexus S phone.

As VentureBeat’s Devindra Hardawar reported in March, Apple chose not to include the technology in the iPhone 5 because it was worried about the lack of a clear industry NFC standard.

Another notable advantage: Erply’s card reader connects through an iOS device’s charging port, meaning transactions might be more secure. By comparison, Square’s device connects through the audio port, which is susceptible to hacking, as demonstrated at this year’s Black Hat security conference.

iPhone 5 coming early October, says AT&T VP

iphone 5An AT&T vice president has apparently confirmed to some employees that the iPhone 5 is set for an early October release, a “high-level”source tells the mobile site Boy Genius Report.

If true, the news means that Apple will likely still announce the iPhone 5 at some point in September. I suspect the company will allow a week or two of leeway to take pre-orders for the device.

This particular rumor is worth paying attention to because BGR was one of the first sites to heavily push a September release for the iPhone 5. I don’t suspect the site would backtrack on its previous reports unless it had a legitimate reason to (in this case, a tip from an actual high-level AT&T source). All Things Digital’s John Paczkowski was the first to break the trend from the September iPhone 5 rumors, reporting that Apple was planning to launch the phone in October.

Additionally, BGR reports that the VP told a group of AT&T managers, “Expect things to get really, really busy in the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly.”

Apple will reportedly have 26 million iPhone 5s built this year, with supposedly 10 million shipping in September alone.

Apple requiring an "innovative, experience of the category-Killer" for potential range low iPhone

Barron, reports on a brief note analyst of RBC markets of capital Mike Abramsky, who shares some of his "points" of a meeting with Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer.

According to the memorandum, Cook and Oppenheimer continue to believe in a "massive opportunity" for Apple in China, see the potential for significant growth it with the recent explosion of the company at $ 9 billion in annual revenue for the market is only the beginning.

Many consider that the introduction of iPhone low-cost market prepaid to key to the future success of Apple in China and many other countries, and Apple executives have noted that such a device would be "an innovative experience, category-killer". Cook and Oppenheimer obviously does not specifically confirm plans to launch a low-cost iPhone, but it is clear that Apple is working hard to find a way to enter and succeed in this market. They include the fact that Apple has "massive opportunity" in China, with the market "significantly untapped" y despite revenues of the Apple of 9 billion dollars in the country. Despite an "explosion" of devices based on Google (GOOG) "Android" operating system, Apple may retain a competitive advantage through its integration of hardware and software and its "curation" of the "ecosystem of application".

On a low-cost iPhone, Abramsky wrote that "the primary test of Apple to launch iPhone in lower - end is an innovative experience, category-killer."

Other topics of discussion included word that Apple gross margins for the quarter may be better than expected due to currently be a "purchaser of the market" for components and the efforts of the company to settle with the Android phone manufacturers in the many ongoing patent disputes.

Page 2: Claimed iPhone 5 Spy Photo

Claimed "spy shots" of unreported for Apple hardware are almost a tradition here to MacRumors. Whenever we approach to a highly anticipated product launch, we have always claimed images of what look like this new product. Images are usually vague, impossible to verify and often false.

It has been posted to our forums with the claim of catch "in the Office of a French operator."

We don't necessarily think this is true, but it has already caused a thread long discussion, we have included here for interest... and the tradition.

GLMPS brings Harry Potter-esque move Photos to the iPhone

There is no shortage of choice when it comes to photography apps for the iPhone. One of the most popular, Instagram, comes to save its 150 millionth photo. As a result, developers must produce something special to differentiate their applications to the competition.

GLMPS (pronounced "Overview") is an application of photography free iPhone, with a touch. Photo traditional apps take a photo when the button "capture" is enabled. GLMPS is different. Once launched, the app saves continually video so that when a photo is taken, GLMPS automatically saves the five seconds of video procedure it.

Co-founder Nick Long said of all the things that the original idea is to capture short videos loop, similar to the way in which photographs are working in the Harry Potter universe. Click on the thumbnail at the bottom right of the image above to see how it works.

Because the app was constantly video and gets the final image of the flow, photographs are not nearly as high quality as the use of more traditional applications of photography. The final snap is added to the film of the users, but the only way to share the GLMPSes is via the GLMPS.com Web site. This site is slightly limited too, with no "private" option, so that users who need to keep in mind the potentially embarrassing images download.

The team behind GLMPS note that this is a work in progress, and there are a lot of features they plan to bring to the APP GLMPS launched today, for free on the App store.

Bloomberg reports on an article from Russian business newspaper RBC Daily claiming that wireless carriers are in discussions with Apple to launch the iPhone 5 in that country as soon as November.Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone 5 may start selling in Russia in November, “almost immediately” after sales begin in the U.S., RBC Daily reported, citing handset retailers it didn’t identify.

The report notes that previous iPhone models have been slow to officially make their way to Russia, setting up a large market for unauthorized device sales. Russian mobile phone operators are obviously eager to bring Apple's latest iPhone models to the country as soon as possible in order to capitalize on their popularity with official distribution.

Claims of the iPhone 5 making its way to China as soon as October have also appeared in recent days as carriers in countries around the world seek to gain access to the rumored forthcoming device as close as possible to the U.S. launch. Apple has historically staggered its international rollouts to prioritize its biggest markets and those where distribution is simplest. But a number of countries with large populations such as China, India, and Russia have often seen device launches come well after the initial wave.[ 21 comments ]Tweet Top Rated Comments(View all)

There are no Apple Stores in Russia. There are only Apple authorized resellers, which are not the same thing. Also, most Russians live on levels that go beyond poverty. That is one problem with many foreigners. They see Moscow or Petersburg and think that that's Russia. It is not. Visit Ivanovo, or Kostroma, or any other city and tell me if you can find people with "money" when most people there can't afford to pay for water.Rating: 1 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1devianterPosted: 2 days ago at 03:33 pmThere are no Apple Stores in Russia. When people talk about Russia they usually mean Moscow or St.Petersburg. Like when people talk about USA they mean New York, DC, Los Angeles etc. Visit Camden (NJ) or Sarasota in US , i bet half the population doesn't give a flying F about iPhone there either. More iPhone parts 5 are fleeing on the future of the official launch

As noted @ chronic, at least a reseller was able to get their hands on another part of the iPhone 5. This time, it's a flex of the iPhone proximity 5 light sensor cable, illustrated above.
We asked Kyle Wiens of iFixit on differences. He noted that the corresponding part of the iPhone 4 (pictured above, right) contains the power button, noise, the cancellation of the light mic and proximity sensors / ambient. The new part of the iPhone 5 did not contain the mic, so it must be placed elsewhere on the iPhone 5.
Previously, we have also seen for 5 leak iPhone dock connector. Thus, while we can build an iPhone 5 and yet, the flight of the individual parts is probably a sign that we get the closest and launch more.
The most recent rumors have the launch of the iPhone in October 5.
Last updated: Kyle also noted that the noise cancellation microphone is also absent from this part on the CDMA iPhone version 4, rather was integrated into the headset jack Assembly. There are still, however, some differences in the relative orientations of the various components included on the iPhone part 5 to 4 GSM or CDMA iPhone framework.
