MS offers free Windows phones, training to WebOS devs — gets 1K responses

Following HP’s swift destruction of its webOS ecosystem last week, Microsoft stepped up on Friday to give webOS developers a new home with free Windows Phone devices, training, and tools.

Now, the company’s Senior Director of Windows Phone 7 development Brandon Watson, who made the initial plea to webOS devs via Twitter, says?he’s received nearly 1,000 responses to the offer.

We’ve dropped a line to Watson to see if he can offer up more information on what exactly Microsoft will give webOS migrants. Judging from the frantic pace of his Twitter stream over the weekend though (he received over 500 responses in about 22 hours), it’s clear plenty of developers are interested in taking him up on the offer.

While Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform is still struggling with sales, it’s tough to deny that the company has done a great job at wrangling developer support. WP7 has nearly 30,000 apps in its marketplace — an impressive figure given that the company started from scratch when the platform launched last fall. Personalities like Watson have also helped Microsoft solidify developer relations — something that Palm and HP never managed to accomplish with webOS. Watson went as far as to put his personal cellphone number on Twitter last year to discuss Windows Phone development.

Microsoft still has a ways to go with Windows Phone. It’s playing catch-up with Apple’s 500,000 iOS apps and Android’s 250,000 apps, and device?sales haven’t been strong enough to give Windows Phone any significant market share. That could all change, though, with the release of Mango, Windows Phone 7′s first big update, as well as new devices this fall, including Nokia’s first flagship Windows Phone.

HTC launching 2 Windows Phone Mango devices Sept. 1

windows-phone-mangoMobile manufacturer HTC will reportedly launch two new Windows Phone devices equipped with Mango, the first huge update to Windows Phone 7, at an event Sept 1.

HTC declined to comment for this story, saying it does “not speak to rumors or speculation about unannounced products.”

The massive Mango update was already rumored for Sept. 1, so the event date makes sense. Mango will offer more than 500 new features, including direct social networking integration, contact groups, live tile notifications, Xbox Live improvements, Bing indoor maps, and Internet Explorer 9 that’s the same as the desktop version rather than a mobile version.

The report from BGR says HTC will show off the HTC Eternity, a Windows Phone featuring a 3.7-inch display bound for AT&T, and the HTC Omega, a Mango device with a whopping 4.5-inch screen that will be released on T-Mobile.

The Mango push will help catch the Windows Phone platform up to iOS and Android and hopefully attract more consumers. The current crop of Windows Phone devices have not done a good job of helping the OS capture market share, with just 1.7 million devices sold worldwide.

Alongside Mango, the Windows Phone ecosystem could see a new surge of support this fall because of two recent major events. First, the Google-Motorola deal could attract more Android manufacturers to build Windows Phone devices because they see Motorola as having priority. Second, HP’s decision last week to stop building hardware for webOS has caused nearly 1,000 webOS developers to look into Windows Phone development.

What do you think of Windows Phone? Do you think it has a bright future?

Anonymous formclose (x)Apple Reveals Fifth Avenue Cube Plans: Larger, Seamless Glass PanesTuesday August 9, 2011 6:34 am PDT by Eric SlivkaBack in June, Apple began work on a $6.6 million upgrade of the plaza and glass cube at its iconic flagship retail store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Barriers surrounding the plaza and the glass cube itself quickly went up, with customers continuing to access the store through a covered passageway leading to the main entrance. At the time the work began, planning documents revealed that Apple would be removing the glass cube and working on drainage, pavers, and bollards on the plaza, but it was unclear just what changes Apple would be making to the cube itself.

Apple has now revealed its plans for the cube with a new informational sign posted on the barrier surrounding the plaza, showing that the company is completely replacing the cube's glass panels with new, larger panels that will also be "seamless" for a cleaner appearance. We're simplifying the Fifth Avenue cube. By using larger, seamless pieces of glass, we're using just 15 panes instead of 90.

According to the diagram of the new cube, Apple will be using three glass panes per side of the cube (plus the top), with each side pane stretching the entire height of the cube.

Apple last year filed for a trademark on the original design of the Fifth Avenue store's cube, seeking to protect what was recently ranked as one of the most-photographed sites in Manhattan based on a study of geotagged photos posted to Flickr and Picasa.

I did not update to 10.6, kid. My newest MBP (17", Early-2011) came already with 10.6.7. What now!? :D

Quick Time X replaced QT7.

No, QuickTime X in 10.6 uses still the old QT7 API, "under the hood". I know this, because i write QuickTime-based software.

AVFoundation is a new technology that first appeared in iOS and has just been included in OS X with the 10.7 release.

The AV Foundation framework appeared first in iMovie for iOS. Final Cut Pro X included it first on the desktop OS platform (one month before Lion). That is the reason why FCPX runs also on Snow Leopard (not just Lion).Rating: 2 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1munkees3 days ago at 02:26 pm
I guess it's time for Apple to drop QuickTime for Windows as a separate product, fold it into iTunes and remove all extra features like QT Player, control panel and internet plugins. And especially get rid of the absurdity that is QuickTime Pro.

The thing about QT7 Pro, that QTX does not do is sequence of images into a movie, it very fast and efficient, that is why I still use QT 7 pro. Wish :apple: would of added the pro features to QT XRating: 1 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1xStep4 days ago at 12:00 pmThey replaced it in OS X 10.7 (with AV Foundation), not 10.6.

Quicktime 7 is absent from Lion unless you specifically download it.Rating: 1 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1AriX4 days ago at 12:01 pmThey replaced it in OS X 10.7 (with AV Foundation), not 10.6.

That's not true. Quicktime 7 was replaced with Quicktime X in 10.6, although both are still supported in both 10.6 and 10.7. What you linked to is just a new framework.

It's nice to see that Apple still provides security updates for Leopard. A lot of people still use it, and Apple's recent decisions regarding backwards compatibility have bothered me a bit. (Rosetta's demise, as well as Xcode 4's inability to develop for anything before 10.6, and Apple's removal of Carbon tools from Xcode 3).Rating: 1 Positives / 1 NegativesAvatar1ArtOfWarfare4 days ago at 09:26 amQuickTime X isn't on Windows?Rating: 0 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1King Flamez14 days ago at 09:26 amlooks like a pretty big update security wise but, I'm guessing i've already got it for Lion then?Rating: 0 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1King Flamez14 days ago at 09:27 amQuickTime X isn't on Windows?

Quicktime X is not Quicktime 7. Quicktime 7 is Apple's old video foundation which was replaced by Quicktime X in 10.6.

Its nice to see leopard get updates still.Rating: 0 Positives / 0 NegativesAvatar1blackboxxx4 days ago at 12:29 pmWhile about a decade ago QuickTime tried to be the video standard of the web and competed against Windows Media and Real (remember Real? :D), it has lost to Flash long ago, and now HTML5 is the new contender. I haven't seen any website that uses QT (except apple.com) in the past five years. Windows 7 now even plays most .mov files natively. The only remaining reason to have QuickTime on your PC is to run iTunes.

They stopped updating QuickTime 7 with new features long ago, and continue pushing out updates just to fix security bugs, of which there are plenty (I'm serious – it's worse than Flash).

I guess it's time for Apple to drop QuickTime for Windows as a separate product, fold it into iTunes and remove all extra features like QT Player, control panel and internet plugins. And especially get rid of the absurdity that is QuickTime Pro.Rating: 0 Positives / 0 Negatives
